A Harmonious City: The Musical Hierarchy of Ethical Formation
Monday, Nov. 15, 2021, 7 p.m.
Presented by Dr. David M. Wilmington
When we look to St. Bonaventure for guidance about ethical and moral formation (or even for a basic notion of how we should live charitably amongst one another), he frequently speaks in terms of ordering or "hiercharizing" our souls to become like the heavenly Jerusalem – a process of being conformed to a divinely harmonious way of being human. Drawing from several different texts and musical examples, this lecture will explore these overlapping metaphors from a musical perspective in order to understand better how Bonaventure can guide contemporary ethical and political thinking.
